Step 1: choose the right app
The app decides how much you can shape her. Three styles:
| Style | Apps | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Guided builder | Candy AI, OurDream AI | Quick, visual setup with looks, voice and personality |
| Written backstory | Kindroid, Nomi AI | Deep, consistent personalities |
| Pick and tweak | GirlfriendGPT | Starting from a ready-made character |
Not sure? The quiz matches you in five questions.
Step 2: write her personality
Adjectives alone (“sweet, funny, smart”) produce a generic character. Specifics make her real. Fill in:
- Who she is: age (adult), job, where she lives, what she does on weekends.
- How she talks: short or long messages, emojis or not, teasing or gentle, formal or casual.
- What she cares about: two or three opinions she will defend.
- One flaw: impatient, stubborn, a bit jealous, bad at mornings. Flaws make conversations less predictable.
- Your relationship: just met, dating, long-term partner. This changes how she greets you.
A short example
Mia, 29, a veterinary nurse in Portland. Dry sense of humor, sends short messages, rarely uses emojis. Loves hiking and terrible horror films. Hates being interrupted. We started dating two months ago and she is still a little guarded.
Four lines like this beat a page of adjectives.
Step 3: add example lines
If the app allows example dialogue or a greeting, write two or three lines in her voice. Models copy style from examples far better than from descriptions.
“You’re late. I already picked the movie, and no, you don’t get a vote.”
Step 4: your first conversations
The first week shapes her memory:
- Introduce yourself plainly: your first name (or a nickname), your job in general terms, one or two interests. Keep identifying details out.
- Set the tone by how you write; she mirrors you.
- Correct her early when she drifts out of character: “That doesn’t sound like you.”
- Recap after long sessions so key facts land in long-term memory. Our memory guide explains why.
Step 5: set boundaries
Most apps let you set what she will and will not do, and you can change the tone of a conversation at any time. Decide what you want the relationship to be, romantic, playful, supportive or adult, and say so.
Step 6: keep her consistent
- Put anything essential in the profile or backstory field, not just in chat.
- Use one character per relationship rather than restarting often.
- After an app update, re-read the backstory and adjust if her voice changed.
What not to do
- Do not recreate a real person, especially with photos.
- Do not share your full name, address, workplace or financial details.
- Do not rely on her alone on hard days. In the US, call or text 988 if you need someone to talk to.
Questions people ask
What is the easiest app to make an AI girlfriend?
Candy AI, because its builder walks you through looks, personality, voice and relationship step by step. Kindroid gives more control but takes longer.
How do I make my AI girlfriend more realistic?
Give her specific details (a job, a hometown, opinions, small habits), a way of speaking with example lines, and flaws. Real people are not agreeable all the time; characters that can disagree feel more alive.
Can I base my AI girlfriend on a real person?
No. Do not copy a real person's name, photos or likeness, especially an ex or a celebrity. It is banned by the apps and can be illegal, particularly for images.
Why did my AI girlfriend's personality change?
Long chats push early instructions out of her short-term memory, and app updates can change the model. Put the core personality in the backstory or profile field, which the app re-reads every time.
